Dartford Road, Dartford, Kent Plea: Admitted conspiracy to burgle Reader, a career criminal known as “The Master” and “The Governor” by his fellow gang members, had stood trial in the s accused of murdering a police officer. He was chosen to mastermind the Hatton Garden raid due to his involvement in the notorious Brinks Mat robbery of Reader – and fellow criminal Kenneth Noye – were suspected of laundering the proceeds and placed under surveillance.
When they found Det Con John Fordham spying on them in the grounds of Noye’s home in Kent, Noye stabbed the detective 11 times in the back. Both men were placed on trial for murder but were acquitted after Noye claimed to have been acting in self defence. Police had found 11 gold bullion bars at Noye’s home though and he and Reader were jailed for eight and 14 years respectively for conspiracy to handle stolen goods. Noye would later reach new levels of infamy for the road rage murder of Stephen Cameron and is currently serving a life sentence.
Reader, who ran a used car dealership, pulled out of the Hatton Garden raid after the failed break-in attempt on the first night when the gang’s drill broke. Law and Order Revealed: Here The Telegraph explores their extraordinary underworld histories: Reader was for years the quietly-determined right-hand man of notorious Kenneth Noye, a criminal mastermind and killer, and the pair carried out an elaborate scheme to turn the gold into cash. Reader and Noye — whose doorbell rang the Goldfinger theme when police first came calling – were not involved in the initial theft, but their “fencing” scheme was so vast that the majority of gold jewellery made in Britain at that time had at least a trace of Brink’s-Mat bullion.
However, in an interview with The Telegraph, retired Scotland Yard detective Neil Murphy gives a less flattering account, branding Reader a “thug” for kicking his undercover officer partner as he lay dying in a pool of blood. Reader stood trial over the death at the time but walked free after Noye told jurors he had stabbed the officer amid fears he was a burglar in the grounds of his home in Kent.
Mr Murphy had a breakdown after the acquittals and said the result was “impossible to take”. Metropolitan Police Reader was brought in to the Brink’s-Mat gang while on the run from police after skipping bail after a burglary case collapsed in over claims of jury nobbling. He was brought in to help sell off the loot after gang leader Mickey McAvoy was handed a year prison term. After Hatton Garden, is it still possible to get away with a heist? The Hatton Garden raid was meticulous in its planning, dazzling in its complexity — yet still the perpetrators were caught.

Pathologist Dr Timothy Halliwell, who carried out a postmortem examination on Mrs Williams, gave the cause of death as haemorrhage due to traumatic rupture of the liver, but after hearing evidence from doctors from Glan Clwyd and Aintree the coroner said it was unclear exactly how the rupture had occurred. Glan Clwyd Hospital Image: North Wales Daily Post After she was initially treated for a heart attack, based on the symptoms she had displayed, it was found that a cyst on the liver, first spotted in , had grown to such an extent that it was affecting her lungs.
Asked by the coroner whether , with the benefit of hindsight, the abdominal problems should have been picked sooner, consultant gastro-enterologist Dr Aram Baghomian replied: The chest x-say would not have identified the liver problem. Though Mrs Williams was very ill she eventually improved enough to be transferred to Liverpool, where her condition fluctuated. Though the cyst was believed to be benign the prognosis was poor. He said he did not think he needed to issue a Regulation 28 report to prevent future deaths, adding:
